Sometimes, all a family needs is a day out that doesn’t require a lot of planning. Happily, Canberra is full of places just like this. One of our favourites is the wonderful Lake Ginninderra District Park. This spot is perfect for families. It caters especially to those with little ones or tweens who need to burn off some energy. It truly has something for everyone.
Let’s start with the playgrounds! The park is huge, so it actually offers three fantastic play spaces. Over on the western side, you’ll find a playground complete with much-appreciated shade sails. This area is perfect for hot summer days. It even includes a wheelchair-accessible liberty swing, ensuring that everyone can join the fun. The eastern side has another playground, meaning double the fun and plenty of room for all the kids. Nearby John Knight Memorial Park offers additional playgrounds, beautiful water gardens and walking trails.
But the fun doesn’t stop with the swings and slides. This park is a water-lover’s dream. Kids can splash around safely in the dedicated paddling enclosure on the eastern side. For the older kids, the western side offers a full swimming enclosure. You can also launch a canoe or kayak right into the lake for a family paddle.
Is your child learning to ride? Good news! The park features a dedicated ‘Learn to Ride’ centre near MacDermott Place. This is ideal for those wobbly first attempts on a bicycle or scooter. There are miles of cycle paths lining the foreshore. This makes it easy to turn a lesson into a lovely family ride.
When it’s time to refuel, Lake Ginninderra has you covered. There are plenty of picnic tables and barbecues scattered throughout the park. Grab a snag and enjoy the beautiful views of the lake and its many waterbirds. It’s an easy, fun, and affordable Canberra day trip.
You should definitely add this lakeside gem to your weekend adventure list!
