f you are looking for a way to keep the boredom at bay this January, the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) has the perfect solution. On Thursday, 22 January 2026, the NFSA is hosting a special school holiday screening of the comedy masterpiece, Chicken Run. It is a fantastic opportunity for Canberra families to gather the flock and head to the cinema for a shared laugh.

The film is a hilarious “poultry-themed” spoof of The Great Escape. It follows a group of determined chickens as they plot a daring getaway from their farm before they end up in a pie. Because it was created by the same geniuses behind Wallace & Gromit, the animation is stunning and the humour works for both kids and adults. You will find yourself rooting for these feathered friends as they learn the true value of teamwork and bravery.

The Arc Cinema in Acton is a wonderful venue for families. It offers a cool, air-conditioned sanctuary where kids can settle into plush seats while parents enjoy the crisp, high-quality sound. Before the movie starts, you can explore the beautiful Art Deco building or even grab a snack at the newly renovated cafe, Dom’s.

Tickets are very family-friendly at just $12 for adults and $10 for concessions. Since the screening starts at 1:00 PM, it fits perfectly into a busy summer schedule.

Whether you are a local or just visiting the ACT, this charming afternoon out is sure to be a highlight of the holidays.
